I drove up very slowly so she didn't run far off. I know from experience that if I had gotten out of my car to retrieve my slr from the back, she would bolt. So I got out my S3, which I keep in the console between the front seats. This little camera has a terrific reach - comparable to over 400 mm. It's harder to control all of the variables of shooting - but it's perfect for a grab shot like this.

It's almost impossible to drive anywhere now without seeing deer. Two are often standing in our driveway whenever we come home. It's mating season, or soon to be, and the deer are bolder right now. Many more car/deer collisions occur in Oct/Nov than any other time of the year.

Turkey Parade

 Turkey Parade
Originally uploaded by A Naturalist's Journal
A group of 20 turkeys was stopping traffic on Rte 2 this morning. Unfortunately, he was in uneven light and I was at the end of my image making options (i.e. - iso 1600, long lens and relatively slow shutter speed).

North American River Otter

 North American River Otter
Originally uploaded by naturalist's journal
The light was too contrasty to get really good, clear images.
